Sights & Sounds: Darrel Kennedy
Common Discourse is a project designed to help others (and ourselves) think through creativity, focus, and intentional work—from Alex Tan & Alice Otieno.
Every Tuesday we share words from a journal, a few ideas, a quote from somebody else, and links worth sharing. On Fridays we invite a guest to share images from their camera roll and a sound that resonates with them.
Darrel Kennedy is a producer and digital content creator based in Los Angeles. She currently works as a marketer at Seed, and is avidly collecting and researching on are.na.
Though we’ve been following each other for a while, we only recently connected properly after realising that we both shared an interest in the curation of spaces and experiences.
I mentioned to her on a bi-weekly call that we’ve been having, how much our conversations have prompted reflections on the need and importance of community. As well as spaces where you can show up in the entirety of who you are, as you know there’s a mutual understanding and recognition.
Here’s what she sent us this week!

Sights—
As I enter June, I realize a deeply potent sense of change is approaching. It's triggering my fight or flight senses, inspiration, curiosity, doubt, and even growing pains. No literally, my back is hurting as I write this. The images and music included in this collection reflect things that have inspired me, soothed me, and express uneasy feelings I have yet to pinpoint.
The lighting designer for Snoh Aalegra's North American tour carried that entire show and truly gave me my money's worth. I will not rest easy until I can place that credit and continue to admire them from a far.
Have been unraveling my deeply-rooted ancestral connection to the ocean and peace.
Professional headshots and their deeper meaning have been taking up real estate in my mind for quite some time. I believe I'm reaching the actionable part of my over-thinking process.
Have been feeling very ashamed and out of sync with my body in the process of fully recovering from Covid. Awareness is the first step. Not sure if I'm yet ready for the next.
Note to self: It's not as bad as it seems. Gratefulness is the cure.
Sounds —
The Rent (2005) soundtrack snuck back into my world while driving down the PCH. Though the music is very far from drop-top cali; wind-in-your-hair vibes, it really spoke to me at that moment. I believe tomorrow I will revisit the entire movie and weep a well-deserved off-loading of capitalistic hurly-burly. Yes, hurly-burly is my vocab word of June.
Thanks for consuming!
