Sights & Sounds: Maddy Weavers
Common Discourse is a project designed to help others (and ourselves) think through creativity, focus, and intentional work—from Alex Tan & Alice Otieno.
Every Tuesday we share words from a few ideas, a quote from somebody else, and links worth sharing. On Fridays we invite a guest to share images from their camera roll and a sound that resonates with them. Words from the journal will come at least twice a month.
Maddy Weavers is a designer, writer and editor living between London and Barcelona. She currently works as an associate editor at Real Review and editorial assistant at Apartmento.
Maddy and I serendipitously bumped into each other earlier this year while working in the city. After last seeing each other in school when we were 17/18, it was a nice surprise catching up and seeing what we’ve been up to since then.
One thing I always remembered and admired while studying together was the precision and attention to detail in Maddy’s work—specifically her drawings. That same quality still defines both her writing and designs today.
Here’s what she shared with us this week!

I opened Alice’s message about doing this week’s newsletter sat at the top end of Barcelona’s beach stretch. Very eye-roll, very aspirational-Mediterranean-lifestyle of me, but after hearing complaints of the get-hold-ability of one writer who dedicated their (sporadic) bath times to all DM, iMessage, and email replies, I’ve been developing a similar practice. It’s 09:15, it’s Sunday, I’ve got a bad coffee made good with Type-2 inducing levels of sugar, and I’m between a discarded something-and-lemonade from Opium nightclub and a man in downward dog. I listened to BBC World Service’s Newshour on the walk down, as I do most days, so I’m satisfied I’ve covered everything everywhere else—today, the dire premiership prospects back home. As I start to wade my way through the five-day inbox backlog, I watch two French boys tackle each other into the waves over a small beachball.
Nothing profound to say: jealous of their lack of admin, bitter about their energy levels, at this fucking time! sentimental over my own childhood, I should message my sisters, especially the midwife one, is it too early in the UK? she’s probably just getting in from her 7–7 shift, was the Boris and Rishi meeting last night or tonight? I’m going to get in the water in a minute, is my tampon string sticking out of my knickers? I should have worn the boy boxers, I need to put a wash on, I’ll fix the washing machine this afternoon, don’t forget to write it on your to-do list! and what am I going to send to Alice? I’m going to get in the water now. — Maddy
