Sights & Sounds: Diego Vourakis
Common Discourse is a project designed to help others (and ourselves) think through creativity, focus, and intentional work—from Alex Tan & Alice Otieno.
Every Tuesday we share an idea from us, a quote from somebody else, and links worth sharing. On Fridays we invite a guest to share images from their camera roll and a sound that resonates with them.
Diego Vourakis is a Peruvian photographer and director based in Los Angeles, whose work touches on themes of identity, culture, and home. Alongside his personal practice is a collaborative studio, Amile, and magazine, Present Space, where projects range between fashion, art, objects, and physical spaces.
His contribution this week comes from a recent body of work titled De Cara Al Sol, which documents time spent in Cuba between 2020-2023. The project is as much a retrospective of the trip, as it is a reflection of his own connection to home and one’s roots. You can read more about the project in a recent interview with Juan Duque.
A joyful and light-hearted spirit is palpable throughout the images and sound(s) shared, transporting you to the moments in which they were captured. Whether Cuba is a place you have visited or not, you can’t help but long for what it offers.
